6 tips for starting a business

Starting a business can be tricky, especially if it’s your first one. We’ve come up with six tips that could help you before you venture out in to the unknown.

Find out if you have the right personality to start a business

Perform a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis on yourself to find out whether you have the right personality to create and manage a business. Do you have the right contacts? Are you organised? Do you have the right funding? You’ll find all this out after completing your SWOT analysis. If the results are mainly positive, move on to the second tip.

Identify your market

Will there be a market for your product or service? If there isn’t it’s unlikely that your business will succeed in the long run. Talk to people; find out if there is a need for your business. If there’s a hole in the market then you could be on to a winner.

Set out a long term vision

What do you want to achieve with your business? How do you want your business grow? A long term vision will keep you motivated and determined, leading to a better chance of your business succeeding in the future.

Set yourself goals for the short, medium term also

Whilst it’s important to set out a long term vision for your business, you need to plan for both the short and medium term also. This is how you’ll track growth and measure the success of your business over the coming months and you can predict where your business will go in the future.

Create a business plan

A business plan is a written document that will describe your business. In here you need to expand upon your business idea, set out your goals (short, medium and long term) and document your predicted finances. It’ll also need to include your branding, structure and any potential issues you may face. A business plan needs to be as detailed as it can possibly be, because then you can find any weaknesses in your idea and plan how to overcome them.

Get funding

There are numerous ways to fund your business which you’ll need to research and put in to your business plan. You could get financial support from a bank, or start a crowdfunding campaign to generate money. Explore and find out the most suitable way to finance your business.
